Camp RAD Celebrates 13 Years of Empowering Youth with Disabilities by Promoting Health, Wellness and Life Skills

Concluding its 13th successful season, Camp RAD continues to make a significant impact on the lives of youth with disabilities in the community by focusing on health, wellness and essential life skills. Throughout the month of June, 35 campers engaged in a variety of enriching activities designed to promote physical activity, foster personal growth and enhance independence.

For over a decade, Camp RAD has been at the forefront of providing a supportive and inclusive environment where youth with disabilities can thrive. Through carefully crafted activities, campers explore various aspects of health and wellness, including nutrition education, physical fitness and activities that promote life skills that can be carried into adulthood.

“Our camp is the only camp in the area for adolescents with disabilities that emphasizes skill acquisition to help them transition into adulthood,” said Keagan Kiely, director of the Center for Rehabilitation and Independent Living in the Waters College of Health Professions. “Transitional issues are one of the primary obstacles facing families of children with disabilities in rural areas.”

Throughout the camp season, campers are offered a range of recreational and social opportunities to not only gain valuable skills in physical fitness and wellness but also develop crucial life skills such as teamwork, communication and self-advocacy.

The supportive environment, created by Georgia Southern University faculty and students with expertise in the areas of adapted physical activity, encourages personal exploration and allows campers to build lasting friendships with peers who share similar experiences.

As Camp RAD looks ahead to its future, it remains committed to expanding its impact and providing even greater opportunities for youth with disabilities to thrive.
