More Than a Name: Commemorating Bulloch County’s African-American fallen soldiers of the First World War

More Than a Name: Commemorating Bulloch County's African-American fallen soldiers of the First World War.

Henderson Library 2nd Floor, Georgia Southern University; 24 March thru 1 August 2025.

Approximately 370,000 African Americans served in the First World War, including thousands of Georgians. In Bulloch County, dozens of African American men volunteered for or were drafted into service, and 13 of those men died while in uniform. The Georgia Department of Archives began collecting materials to honor fallen soldiers in 1919. Two years later, the Military Department of the State adopted another project, The Georgia State Memorial Book, as its official record. Despite the sacrifices made by Georgia’s African American servicemen, they were essentially ignored in these postwar commemorative efforts.

This exhibition aims to grant Bulloch County’s fallen African Americans the place they deserve in the community’s collective memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War.

The exhibition will be on display from March 24, 2025 – August 1, 2025 with a special opening program on April 1, 2025.

The Georgia Southern University Department of History presents "More than a Name", exhibition opening and public lecture with Dr. Amanda M. Nagel.
