Belk Scholars Program Offers New Scholarship Opportunity for Retail Students
Georgia Southern University and Belk have teamed up to offer scholarship opportunities in the form of the Belk Scholars Program for students pursuing a career in retail related fields.
Through a gift of
$25,000 the Belk Scholars Program will be created and each year, $20,000 will
be designated for the award of Belk Scholarships to the most promising
University students who will also serve as interns for the company. The gift
will also establish the Belk Student Travel Fund at $5,000 per year to provide
opportunities for student travel to the National Retail Federation's BIG Show in
New York City.
“The partnership with Belk for the creation of the Belk Scholars Program is an exciting opportunity for Georgia Southern and our students,” said Vice President of University Advancement Salinda Arthur. “This creates an ideal outlet for students looking to brighten their future, and the University appreciates the confidence a national retail company such as Belk puts into our students and academic programs.”
The Belk Scholars
Program will not only benefit students at the University, but will also provide
Belk with an ongoing source of strong potential managers, give the company a
permanent footprint on Georgia Southern’s campus, link its name to a
prestigious award and add to the University’s ability to engage students in
valuable experiences.
The inception of the
Belk Scholars Program continues the long-lasting relationship between Belk and
Georgia Southern. Last year, more University graduates were selected for Belk’s
management trainee program than any other college in the nation, and two
Georgia Southern alumni were among 10 Belk employees nationwide accepted into
Belk’s Executive Training Program.
At the local level, Belk
of Statesboro has supported the University since 1970, gifting nearly $112,000
to a broad range of programs in academics and athletics, including the College
of Business Administration’s Center for Retail Studies.
