Period poverty prompts professor to kick off hygiene, food drive on Armstrong Campus

Rochelle Lee, Ed.D.

After learning that at least 500 million women worldwide are impacted by period poverty, the inaccessibility to safe, affordable sanitary products, Georgia Southern University faculty member Rochelle Lee, Ed.D., took action to help students on the Armstrong Campus have access to feminine hygiene products.

Lee, an assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sciences in the Waters College of Health Professions, presented a proposal to her department asking for faculty to donate supplies.

“I asked my colleagues to join me in supporting the period pantry for Georgia Southern students on the Armstrong Campus, and my colleagues and members of the Waters College of Health Professions dean’s office responded,” said Lee. “There was an overwhelming response in anonymous donations to meet this call.”

The first round of donations, which included hygiene products and food, filled a two-tiered cart and were delivered to the Dean of Students office at the beginning of February. Lee has challenged her colleagues to continue to support the food and period pantries on the Armstrong Campus throughout the 2021 calendar year and plans to donate the items monthly.

Donations are currently being accepted and can be placed in the donation bins located in Ashmore Hall, room 106.
