Model United Nations Delegation Earns National Recognition
Georgia Southern University's Model United Nations (MUN)
delegation, a group of students interested in international affairs, has earned
two awards from the National Model United Nations (NMUN) organization.
At the New York City conference held recently, Georgia Southern received awards
for Outstanding Position Papers and Outstanding Delegation.
Nominated from among the student body, participants in Georgia Southern’s MUN
delegation are selected for their level of interest in international affairs
and their availability. Among the group, a broad range of majors are
represented including political science, international studies, criminal
justice, history, engineering, biology and public relations.
Delegates take a class in Model United Nations and are paired with a partner to write position papers every week, participate in simulations, give speeches, do research and more. They attend three conferences throughout the year.
“The homework load for the class is probably 3-5 times that of the average class. Students all agree that it is probably the most time-consuming activity they participate in during college, but the experience is also one of the most rewarding,” says political science professor Barry Balleck.
This is the ninth time in 10 years that Georgia Southern has been awarded the recognition for outstanding position paper writing, and the fourth time in the last five years that the University has been recognized as an outstanding delegation.
Sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association, the NMUN Conference is the oldest and most prestigious Model United Nations conference in the world. It is attended by over 500 schools and over 5,000 delegates from five continents. Georgia Southern has been attending this conference for the last 41 consecutive years, making the University one of the longest-standing, continuous programs of its kind in the country.
