Artemis Ray “Arty” Allen (he/him/his) earned his master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Columbus State University (Columbus, GA) in December 2018. He received his Bachelor’s in Biblical Studies with concentrations in Preaching and Counseling from Point University (West Point, GA) in 2014. Arty has worked in Residence Life at both Point University and Columbus State prior to shifting to clinical work at the University of West Georgia Counseling Center as an intern and then as a staff counselor. Arty’s counseling style is influenced by humanistic models as well as Gestalt therapy and creative expressive therapy. His clinical interests include LGBTQIA+ population concerns, Transgender and Non-binary gender development and concerns, anxiety, depression, grief, and Autism Spectrum Disorder/Asperger’s. Arty approaches therapy as a collaboration and works from a strengths-based multiculturally informed framework.

Dr. Caldwell (she/her/hers) received her doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology in 2000 from Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, TX, where she also completed her pre-doctoral internship. She joined the Counseling Center staff in August of 2000 as a staff psychologist. She has since served as the Assistant Director for Training, and the Interim Clinical Services Director. Dr. Caldwell has been the Director of the Center since January of 2012; in January 2018, she became the Executive Director of the Counseling Center for all Georgia Southern campuses. Dr. Caldwell is the Past Chair of the university’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the Teal House: Statesboro Regional Sexual Assault Center and Child Advocacy Center (SRSAC). On the state level, Dr. Caldwell is the past chair of the Regents Advisory Council’s Counseling Directors Association, and the coordinator of the University System of Georgia’s Crisis Response Network. On a national level, Dr. Caldwell is currently serving her third elected term to the Directorate Board of the Commission for Counseling and Psychological Services of the American College Personnel Association and was certified as a Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Responder.

Dr. Caldwell’s clinical interests are varied and include women’s issues, multiculturalism, and professional development concerns. Dr. Caldwell was the recipient of a 2005 Award of Merit for “Excellence in Service to the Georgia Southern University Community”, the 2006 “Commitment to Advocacy Award” for dedication to the issue of Sexual Assault Education, the 2010 “40 Under 40” award from the Statesboro Herald for professional achievement, and the 2014 “Outstanding Contributions to Counseling Center Work” award from Division 17 of the American Psychological Association. In 2019, she was awarded both the “College Counseling Advocacy Award” from the American College Counseling Association and the “College Counseling Director of the Year Award” from the Georgia College Counseling Association.

Hunter Gatewood (he/him) received his PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Spalding University. His clinical work is informed from interpersonal and psychodynamic theory, which essentially means exploring how our patterns of interacting with people and assumptions of others impacts our relationships with those other people. For example, having the belief that others will not value our accomplishments plus not sharing our accomplishments with others, may make it hard for them to celebrate us and/or feel connected to us. Hunter has special interest in working with individuals within the LGBT+ community and those who have experienced interpersonal traumas (e.g., chronic invalidation or emotional manipulation).

Dr. Gunnerson received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology through the University of Utah. He has worked in a variety of counseling environments including university departments, counseling centers, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and private practice. His main research interest includes the impact of religion on client’s experience of counseling. He has also investigated college success and retention in first generation college students. His clinical interests include issues related to religion, grief work, and working through trauma. His approach to therapy is largely client-centered wherein he strives to make each client feel comfortable and safe, while simultaneously adding cognitive-behavioral, acceptance and commitment therapy, and interpersonal interventions.

Upon program completion, Jade has served in university advocacy roles and in an off campus private practice setting. Nate Jensen (he/him/his) received his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Georgia Southern University. DeAudra Reed (she/her/hers) has deep roots at Georgia Southern University, where she earned both a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with a minor in Child and Family Development.

Prior to joining the GSU Counseling Center, DeAudra had the privilege of working in a variety of settings, including a college counseling center, a vocational rehabilitation department, private practice, community mental health, and K-12 schools. These experiences have equipped her with a broad perspective and a deep understanding of the varied challenges individuals face throughout different stages of life.

Melinda Rule (she/her/hers) received her M.S in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through the University of North Florida. She has prior clinical experience working in youth residential centers and university counseling centers. Her main research areas involve advocacy for weight-inclusivity and size diversity in counselor education and athletic identity loss.

She enjoys working with students on a variety of concerns including but not limiting identity development and exploration, anxiety, relationship concerns, body image, body liberation, and athletic/high-performers concerns. Dr. Mark Taracuk (pronounced: terra chuck) is a licensed psychologist at the Georgia Southern University Counseling Center. He is currently the Associate Director of Training and the training director for the APA-Accredited Doctoral Internship in Psychology. Dr. Taracuk also serves as a member of the Georgia Southern University Sexual Assault Response Team and on the Prevention of Men’s Violence against Women Champions Committee.

He completed his doctoral degree in counseling psychology at Oklahoma State University and his doctoral internship at the Georgia Southern University Counseling Center. He received his master’s degree in counseling from Indiana University, his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ohio State, and is a National Certified Counselor. His clinical focus includes college student development, existential concerns, autism spectrum disorders, sexual health and well-being, intimate partner violence, relational concerns, social justice-related issues, and gender and sexual diversity. His therapeutic orientation is an integrative approach utilizing Rogerian, feminist, and solution-focused methods with a dash of psychodynamic.

Dr. Taracuk serves as treasurer for the Society of Counseling Psychology, Division 17 of the American Psychological Association. He is also past-chair for Division 17’s Section on Advocacy for Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, and Past-President and Continuing Education Co-Chair for the Georgia College Counseling Association. He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies

Tyhescia “Ty” White (she/her/hers) received her Bachelors of Science Degree in the field of Psychology with a minor in Child and Family Development from Georgia Southern University, graduating in 2005 and she completed her Masters of Science Degree from South University in 2009 in Professional Counseling. She is currently a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia and has worked in the field of mental health for 15 years. Ty has years of experience in Youth Detention Centers, group homes, Safe Haven Shelters, Higher Education, public schools, substance abuse inpatient/outpatient settings and private practice. She joined Georgia Southern Counseling Department Staff in November of 2021 and eagerly works to help connect students with resources needed to help support them both academically and personally. Jess’ areas of clinical interests include working with the queer community, non-monogamous relationships, and people exploring and developing their adult identity. Jaden Johnson is a doctoral intern from Wright State University’s School of Professional Psychology. She has worked in college counseling centers, private practice, residential treatment, and psychological evaluation settings. Jaden’s clinical interests include anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, developing self-compassion, and equine-assisted therapy. Her therapeutic style is client-centered with elements of acceptance and commitment therapy, feminist therapy, and liberation therapy techniques.

Jenna (they/she/he) is a pre-doctoral intern completing their Counseling Psychology Ph.D. at Tennessee State University. They have previous experience working in community mental health, in private practice, and within a University Counseling Center. Their research interests include experiences of prejudice faced by those who are LGBTQ+ as well as the factors that relate to prejudice toward these individuals. Clinically, they have a special interest in working with young adults who identify as LGBTQ+, especially those whose identities fall outside of a prescribed binary (i.e. trans+ and bi+) and those who have other marginalized intersecting identities. Within their counseling relationships, Jenna values warmth, authenticity, transparency, compassion, and honoring client’s varying identities and individual experiences. They hope to provide a safe environment for clients to address concerns and process uncomfortable emotions. Their main theoretical orientations include acceptance and commitment therapy and psychodynamic therapy, both through a relational-cultural lens.

If you could afford a one-week, all expenses paid trip anywhere in the world, where would it be? That’s a really tough call, but I think I would love to visit Iceland in the summer. I love being in nature and from pictures I’ve seen it looks like the clouds could be touching the water in certain places in Iceland. I’ve also never been to a natural hot spring before.

Courtney Shields (she/her/hers) is a current 4 th year doctoral student at the University of Northern Colorado and is completing her pre-doctoral internship at the Georgia Southern University Counseling Center. She has worked in a range of counseling environments including community mental health, juvenile justice departments, adult probation and parole departments, college counseling centers, NCAA D1 athletic departments, and private practice. Her approach to counseling is very relational in nature and she believes that all people are unique combinations of the stories that have been created throughout their lives based on lived experience, cultural backgrounds, societal beliefs, and more. By understanding how these stories impact our lives and align with our own personal values, we can change and adapt them to better serve us and move us toward our goals. Courtney has particular interest in working with student-athletes, individuals struggling with eating or body image related concerns, as well as individuals who may have experienced or been exposed to sexual violence and/or domestic violence.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I love all things adrenaline and outdoors. In my spare time you’ll likely find me, my partner and two dogs on a hike, camping, paddle boarding, or doing some adrenaline filled activity. On the flip side, I also love a good nap on the couch on a rainy day and baking for my loved ones!

Deunte’ (he/him) received his bachelor’s of science degree in Psychology here at Georgia Southern. He is currently completing his master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and has prior experience working in community mental health. Deunte’s areas of clinical interest include working with anxiety, depression, trauma, interpersonal conflicts, personal growth, and others. His approach to counseling is person-centered with influences from solution-focused therapy, mindfulness based therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.
