This profession offers a rewarding career with a clear path for growth and advancement, particularly for those aspiring to become pharmacists. We’ll explore the career trajectory of a pharmacy technician, the opportunities for advancement, and the future outlook for those choosing this path.
What Does a Pharmacy Technician Do?
Pharmacy technicians are healthcare professionals who assist pharmacists in dispensing prescription medications to customers or health professionals. Their duties include:
- Preparing and dispensing medications: Ensuring accurate medication distribution.
- Managing inventory: Keeping track of medication stock and supplies.
- Interacting with customers: Answering questions and providing guidance on medication usage.
- Processing insurance claims: Handling billing and insurance verification.
- Maintaining records: Keeping detailed records of medication and patient information.
Pharmacy technicians work in various settings, including retail pharmacies, hospitals, and long-term care facilities, offering a dynamic and engaging work environment.
How to Become a Pharmacy Technician
Step 1: Education and Training
To become a pharmacy technician, one typically needs a high school diploma or GED. Following this, aspiring technicians can pursue formal training through accredited pharmacy technician programs available at community colleges, vocational schools, or online. These programs usually take between 6 months to 2 years to complete and cover topics such as pharmacology, pharmacy law and ethics, medication dosage, and customer service.
Step 2: Certification and Licensing
While requirements vary by state, most require pharmacy technicians to be certified. Georgia Southern University’s Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) offers an immersive Pharmacy Technician course that will prepare individuals for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE®) to obtain the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB®). Obtaining certification can significantly enhance job prospects and career advancement opportunities.
Step 3: Gaining Experience
Hands-on experience is crucial for pharmacy technicians. Many training programs include externships or internships, providing valuable on-the-job experience. Entry-level positions often offer opportunities to learn and grow within the field.
Career Advancement Opportunities

- Compounding: Preparing customized medications for patients with specific needs.
- IV therapy: Handling intravenous medications in hospital settings.
- Nuclear Pharmacy: Working with radioactive materials for medical imaging and treatments.
Transitioning to a Pharmacist Role
For those looking to advance their careers further, becoming a pharmacist is a natural progression. Pharmacy technicians gain practical experience and a deep understanding of pharmacy operations, providing a strong foundation for pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. This typically involves:
- Completing Pre-Pharmacy Coursework: Courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
- Earning a Pharm.D. Degree: A 4-year professional program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
- Licensure: Passing the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and any state-specific exams.
The Future Outlook for Pharmacy Technicians
The demand for pharmacy technicians is expected to grow significantly, driven by an aging population, increasing chronic disease prevalence, and the expanding role of pharmacists in healthcare. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 4% from 2021 to 2031, adding about 16,600 new jobs annually.
As healthcare evolves, pharmacy technicians will be crucial in ensuring safe and effective medication use. Technological advancements and increased responsibilities in medication therapy management and immunizations will further expand career opportunities.
Becoming a pharmacy technician is a fulfilling career and an excellent stepping stone for those interested in pursuing a pharmacist career.
